Paneer

N and I had a lot of fun a few weeks ago making an Indian meal for the Holiday of Shavuos. Shavuos is the one holiday when it is traditional to make dairy. So it was perfect, as our favorite Indian dishes are dairy.

The first dish that we wanted to make was Palak Paneer (spinach and cheese) and the first step to make it is to make the Paneer. Paneer is a mild, creamy cheese used in many Indian dishes. It is usually made from scratch by Indian cooks. So we decided to give it a try.

As we discovered, it is a fairly simple to make Paneer. There are many recipes online as well as Youtube tutorials. The process itself is also fairly straight forward.

Bring milk to a boil.

Add lemon juice to separate the whey (green water).

Pour into a cheesecloth lined strainer. Allow the green water to drain.

Squeeze lightly to remove excess water.

Tie and hang for around an hour, then shape into a disk and it’s ready to eat!

N did a fantastic job! The Paneer was delicious as was the rest of the meal. We really enjoyed it!!
